This is a pretty good piece. I am assuming that implicit in what you have written is that when we help others we help ourselves and when we help ourselves we are ensuring that we are self-sustaining.

The philosophy of altruism is often confused with not living for ourselves but ONLY for others. The essence of altruism, as I see it, is that we have a moral responsibility to live for others because altruism's compass is "from each according to his ability to each according to their need". I disagree because in my view we should help others because we choose to; not because it is a moral edict.

I believe that we can do both: We must help ourselves and can choose to help others. The choice to help others is not a moral imperative. The decision to become self sustaining is.

...beautifully expressed Will!

Though deeply flawed, we still need non-judgement, acceptance and simple kindness. More than ever, we need to give every day the human gifts of the soul that we ourselves crave. Kahil Gibran said, "I drink the water and the water drinks me".

Thanks, Will. Your suggestion is a gift I think we all would love to receive. I wrote a Xmas song about part of your suggestion - giving the gift of a smile. SILENT GIFTS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nQWbgBNbwU

I'm reading a book "What's the Economy for Anyway?" (John de Graaf, David Batker) I recommend this book as a way forward for 2012 and beyond. Imagine what our country would be like if we, as the book embraces, focused on an economy that provided the greatest good for the greatest number of people for the greatest amount of time. This is not a pie-in-sky; some countries have fully or partially implemented this as their economy.

What a great invitation. The only person in my extended family I truly do not like, could, I'm sure, use a break from my inner criticism of him, and I could use a break from it as well. Maybe form a new habit of thought about him all year. That's quite an idea to ponder. Thank you, Will.

Will -

I absolutely agree with you in this article but even if you have the enthusiasm to do something great & are fully motivated but do not have any idea of what 'that' is..how do you find it.

Will
Your personal story about surfing illustrates very well the importance of overcoming fear. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's something to think about and apply.
